Over my 20+ years in Education, both as a teacher and as the Project SAVE coordinator, I have come to see that the Dean of Students plays such an integral role in a school's culture.  It is one of the few positions in a school where the interpersonal relationships with the students last from when they are 10-14 years old- close to a third of their lives-during their most crucial, vulnerable, challenging, exciting, and at times, confusing developmental years. They come to us as children, and leave as young adults.  During these years, they look to us for approval, for guidance, for support and for boundaries.  With the use of prevention techniques and intervention strategies, coupled with restorative practices, I believe that it is the job of the Dean to be supportive of whole-child development and by communicating directly and with sensitivity, to help do whatever it takes to make sure they are successful, both in and out of the classroom.  With a fair, efficient, decisive and thorough approach, we can help empower our students to be mindful and conscientious middle schoolers who will learn to take ownership and responsibility for their social, emotional and personal development and well-being, in middle school and beyond.
